FIRST ROUND : GROUP INTERVIEW

As a New Yorker finding your way through Broad St can be pretty difficult with the narrow roads and people coming from every different direction. However, considering that it was very easy to find POSSE on Wall St by the J Train I came off at I already knew this was going to be a good start. With the optimistic thoughts in mind I walked into the building with a bright smile . The POSSE workforce gave us individual name tags and a number so it could be easy to identify with an abundant of kids in the room. This First Round interview was to test individuals leadership skills as well as the ability to work with others considering POSSE is about allowing a diverse group of individuals to navigate through college easier with a support system of people just like you. It was founded in 1989 and help people different backgrounds financially and socially. It is a 3.5 hour interview and from my experience the first thing that was done was in order to grow familiar to people is that we said our name out loud and how we were feeling. This allowed for a safe space in the building. After we did an activity that allowed for groups to join together and build a model. Although most groups didn’t finish it was based on allowing ourselves to listen to one another’s ideas although not knowing a single person in the group. Another activity we did was creating a Public Service Announcement allowing our creative juices to flow it was very interesting seeing many different bright perspectives. Furthermore, POSSE allowed us to pick a topic and discuss it as well as take turns being leaders of this discussion. Finally, it was time for self reflection where we had 20 minutes to write about a topic that was personal to us and it allowed those who didn’t feel outspoken or didn’t get a chance to speak give another way of allowing their voices to be heard. Overall, POSSE is a great foundation especially in New York that allows kids to be heard and I’m glad I was nominated to enjoy this experience . Thank you !
